From Skateboarding to a Global Street Art Movement

American artist Frank Shepard Fairey (born 15 February 1970) is one of the most influential figures in contemporary street art. A street artist, graphic designer, illustrator, and activist, Fairey first emerged from the skateboarding culture of the late 1980s before building an internationally recognised career that has helped shape modern urban art.

Fairey first gained attention in 1989 with his André the Giant Has a Posse sticker campaign, which evolved into the globally recognised OBEY Giant art project. What began as an experiment in public art quickly developed into a worldwide phenomenon. The bold black, white and red aesthetic of the OBEY campaign has since become one of the most iconic and recognisable visual identities in street art.

While best known for the OBEY Giant campaign, Shepard Fairey has also created influential artworks featuring globally recognised figures including Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela, Angela Davis, Ai Weiwei, Debbie Harry, John Lennon, Muhammad Ali and Edward Snowden. His portraits meld bold graphic design with powerful messages that explore justice, equality, freedom, and social change.

His large-scale murals, screen prints and public artworks frequently explore themes including propaganda, politics, peace, environmental sustainability, equality and human rights. Combining influences from graphic design, pop art and political posters, Fairey's instantly recognisable style blends striking imagery with bold typography and symbolic messaging.

Beyond the streets, Shepard Fairey's work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world. He is also the founder of OBEY Clothing, a fashion label inspired by his artwork and philosophy, and is widely known for creating the iconic "Hope" poster for Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign.
