Lake Tahoe: North America's Largest Alpine Lake

Straddling the border of California and Nevada in the Sierra Nevada, Lake Tahoe is one of North America's most spectacular freshwater lakes. Formed around 2 million years ago and shaped by successive Ice Ages, Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America. Reaching a depth of 501 metres (1,645 feet), it is also the second deepest lake in the United States, surpassed only by Crater Lake in Oregon. Its exceptional water clarity is the result of both its naturally pure mountain watershed and decades of dedicated conservation efforts.

Ongoing conservation initiatives play a vital role in preserving Lake Tahoe’s fragile ecosystem.
