A City Frozen in Time
Every winter, Harbin becomes home to one of the most extraordinary spectacles on Earth. Towering castles, shimmering palaces, giant dragons, famous landmarks, and entire cityscapes emerge from crystal-clear blocks of ice, transforming northeastern China into a frozen world unlike anywhere else.
Held annually from late December to late February, the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival is one of the world's largest winter festivals, drawing artists, sculptors, and visitors from across the globe.
The festival begins on the frozen Songhua River, where enormous blocks of ice are carefully cut, transported, and sculpted into remarkable works of art. By day, the sculptures reveal astonishing craftsmanship; by night, they glow with thousands of coloured lights, creating an icy city that feels almost otherworldly.
From fairytale castles and soaring towers to intricate carvings and interactive ice slides, Harbin pushes the boundaries of what can be created from nothing more than ice and snow.
A Winter Tradition
Harbin's famous ice lanterns have illuminated the city's winters for generations, but the modern Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival was officially established in 1985. Since then, it has grown into an internationally recognised celebration of winter, creativity, and engineering, attracting master sculptors from around the world who transform the city's freezing temperatures into works of art.
Three Festivals in One
Although often referred to as a single festival, Harbin is home to several spectacular attractions that together create the city's famous winter celebration.
Harbin Ice and Snow World is the festival's centrepiece, where enormous illuminated ice buildings, sculptures, and attractions create an unforgettable frozen city.
Across the river, the Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Art Expo showcases monumental snow sculptures carved with astonishing precision, while Zhaolin Park Ice Lantern Art Fair continues Harbin's centuries-old tradition of beautifully crafted ice lanterns.
Together, they create a winter playground unlike anywhere else on Earth.
