THE ONION MARKET FOLK FESTIVAL

WHAT: Zibelemärit, The Onion Market
WHERE: Bern, Switzerland

Long before sunrise, the streets of Bern's UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town come alive with the unmistakable aroma of caramelising onions, freshly baked onion tarts, and steaming bowls of onion soup. Every November, Zibelemärit, or The Onion Market, transforms Switzerland's capital into one of the country's most beloved folk festivals, celebrating a tradition that has been part of Bern for centuries.

A Swiss Tradition Unlike Any Other

The market officially opens at 6:00 am, but locals and visitors begin arriving well before dawn to experience the unique atmosphere. Farmers travel from across the surrounding region to sell beautifully braided onions, decorative onion wreaths, garlic plaits, and colourful produce displays, many painstakingly woven by hand.

Alongside the famous onions, hundreds of stalls offer artisan cheeses, Swiss pastries, handmade crafts, ceramics, textiles, jewellery, wooden toys, and seasonal gifts, creating a vibrant market that attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year.

Confetti Battle

As the morning progresses, the market takes on a more of a Beautiful Chaos atmosphere; Children and adults alike join the famous confetti battle, filling the streets with colourful paper confetti in a light-hearted tradition that has become one of the festival's defining moments. Brass bands, street performers, and traditional entertainment add to the festive spirit before the market winds down in the afternoon.

A Festival Steeped in History

The origins of Zibelemärit are surrounded by legend. One popular story suggests the market began after the great fire of Bern in 1405, when farmers from the nearby city of Fribourg helped rebuild the city and were later granted the right to sell onions in Bern once a year. While historians debate the story's accuracy, records confirm the Onion Market has been celebrated for well over a century and remains one of Switzerland's most cherished annual events.

Whether you're tasting a slice of freshly baked onion tart before breakfast, wandering beneath strings of beautifully braided onions, or finding yourself caught in the lively confetti battle, Zibelemärit offers a uniquely Swiss experience that blends history, food, and community in the heart of one of Europe's most beautiful medieval cities.
