Held on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, the Hong Kong Dumpling Festival celebrates one of China's oldest culinary traditions. It is a public holiday in Hong Kong and Macau, when families and communities gather to share Zongzi, glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo, reed, or lotus leaves and filled with a variety of sweet and savoury ingredients.
The Story Behind the Festival
The festival is traditionally associated with Qu Yuan, a respected Chinese poet and statesman who is said to have drowned himself in the Miluo River over 2,000 years ago. Legend has it, local villagers raced out in boats to search for him while throwing parcels of sticky rice into the water to prevent fish from disturbing his body. Those rice parcels are believed to have evolved into today's zongzi.
Dragon Boats Take Centre Stage
While dumplings remain central to the celebration, the festival is equally famous for its spectacular dragon boat races. Colourfully decorated dragon boats race across Hong Kong's waterways as paddlers move in perfect rhythm to the beat of ceremonial drums. What began as a traditional tribute has evolved into one of the world's most recognised water sports, with Hong Kong hosting some of the most exciting races during the festival.
A Tradition Wrapped in Leaves
Zongzi are the heart of the festival. Made from glutinous rice and wrapped in fragrant leaves, they are traditionally filled with ingredients such as pork, salted egg yolk, mushrooms, chestnuts, red bean paste, or dates. Recipes vary between regions and families, making every dumpling a reflection of local traditions and generations of home cooking.
Throughout Hong Kong, markets, restaurants, bakeries, and food stalls prepare thousands of zongzi in the lead-up to the festival, making it one of the best times of year to experience this much-loved Chinese delicacy.
