Kurokawa Onsen's origins date back over 300 years, when it began as a small rural hot spring settlement serving local farmers and travelers crossing the mountainous region of Kumamoto Prefecture located in the center of Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan's four main islands. Unlike larger resort towns that modernised rapidly, Kurokawa Onsen deliberately preserved its traditional character. In the late 20th century, local inn owners collaborated to maintain a unified aesthetic, removing large signage and modern distractions to create the harmonious village atmosphere visitors experience today.
The development of the Nyuto Tegata system, a popular wooden bath-hopping pass used in famous Japanese onsen towns in the 1980s, further strengthened the town's identity, encouraging visitors to explore multiple baths while supporting local businesses. This cooperative approach has become a model for sustainable tourism in Japan, blending preservation with economic vitality.
